5 charities you can support if you love the ocean
You’re on a lad’s holiday in Spain or maybe you’re surfing in Bali and you see empty plastic bottles floating around in the ocean and plastic straws being washed up onto the shore. This happens all the time, right?
But what do we do about it?
These beaches that bring us relaxation, play, swim, and surf are being destroyed before our very eyes. Ocean Crusaders have found that 100,000 marine creatures and approximately 1 million sea birds a year are dying from plastic entanglement. Scientists have identified 200 areas declared as ‘dead zones’ where no life organisms can now grow.
This is some hard-hitting shit.
Want to help our water playground out?
We love The Ocean Cleanup Project and designed stylish bracelets for men so you can give back and look bang on trend at the same time. 10% of each purchase of our men’s blue charity bracelet or blue watch strap will be donated to The Ocean Cleanup Project.
Below, we have listed five of the top Ocean Cleaning Charities and what they stand for:
1. The Ocean Cleanup Project
This project is determined to clean up the WHOLE ocean and hold the biggest cleanup projects in history to achieve a plastic-free ocean by 2050. An incredible goal to have considering that they state there are currently 3 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean.
They are currently focused on cleaning up 50% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 5 years by deploying their advanced cleanup roaming systems throughout the ocean. This charity is truly awesome, which is why we are proud to be helping them out with our charity bracelets for men.
Oceana is the largest organization in the world solely devoted to marine conservation and saving million-year-old fish species that are being driven to extinction. They also focus on the issue of overfishing and the threat it has on ocean ecosystems and the livelihoods of fishermen.
Because of this, the amount of fish being caught daily is at an all-time low. They are on a mission to change the way fishing is conducted by using science-based fishery management systems that limits the number of catches, protect habitats and allows oceans and species to rebound and recover.
3. Ocean Conservancy
This charity is another leading advocacy group working for the protection of special marine habitats, the restoration of sustainable fisheries and reducing the human impact on ocean ecosystems. Ocean Conservancy is focused on educating and advocating for policy changes to protect ocean wildlife.
They have many different projects running around the world such as their famous International Coastal Cleanup Program where they recruit millions of volunteers around the globe to collect and document the trash that litters their local coastlines. They also run projects focusing on specifically protecting the Arctic and the Gulf of Mexico.
4. Coral Reef Alliance
Specifically focused on conversing the health and resilience of coral reef, CRA works with fisherman, government leaders, divers, and marine biologists to unite these communities and lead holistic conversation programs such as Healthy Fisheries for Reefs, Clean Water for Reefs, Intact Reef Ecosystems and Science of Adaptation. They focus primarily on Fiji, Hawaii, Indonesia, and the Mesoamerican region.
5. Plastic Oceans Foundation
This global non-profit organization is all about education. Their sole purpose is to change the world’s attitude towards using plastic through awareness campaigns, media, and educational productions.
Plastic Ocean's main goals are to inspire people to stop using single-use plastic and educate them on making simple swaps that can benefit the ocean tremendously. They are currently campaigning within communities, schools, and organizational groups.
