Tennis Bracelet

Tennis Bracelets have always fascinated me, mostly because tennis is my number 1 sports. Since I am a kid I am playing tennis. I’m from the early ‘80s, so a big fan of Andre Agassi. Even though he was fashionable, he never wore tennis bracelet.

Later in life when I started to become interested in jewelry, bracelets and other luxury items for men I found out about the tennis bracelet. Above all, I love its history and how it became a tennis bracelet. Needless to say that my interest resulted in a brand. If you want to see the founder story behind Chibuntu, just check out our About Us page.

In this blog, we'll dig deep into the history, designs, and famous people who wear tennis bracelets. I love sharing my passion for bracelets, so let’s dive into the tennis bracelet.

History of Tennis Bracelets

When I look at tennis bracelets it clearly shows that they are elegant, and have a timeless design, but how did they get dubbed the ‘Tennis Bracelet’?

The term ‘tennis bracelet’ was started during an incident at the 1987 U.S. Open involving top-ranked tennis player Chris Evert.

During that match, Evert’s diamond bracelet broke and fell off her wrist. She famously requested that the match should be paused while she searched for her bracelet. It was live on television and everybody was surprised. Commentators dubbed the missing piece her "tennis bracelet," and so it was born. It became a well-known name and popular among tennis lovers.

The Rise in Popularity

Following Chris Evert’s 1987 incident, the demand for similar diamond bracelets skyrocketed. This lead to the jewelry industry adopting the term tennis bracelet. These bracelets symbolize a blend of elegance and an active lifestyle. As I write this people wear them as a statement, just during the day. Or for special occasions only, cause they aren’t cheap of course.

They became a fashion statement, showcasing that the owner “did well” in life.

Today, celebrities and fashion enthusiasts love them, they admire them for their timeless looks, and of course for their statement. This evolution highlights the bracelet's journey from a practical sports accessory to a luxurious and iconic piece of jewelry.

Evolution in Design

Initially, tennis bracelets featured a simple string of round-cut diamonds. Today’s designs are much more diverse. Using different gemstones like sapphires, emeralds, and rubies, as well as new & modern patterns and settings.

Modern diamond tennis bracelets encompass different diamond shapes like princess, oval, and marquise cuts. They now cater to a wide range of tastes.

This evolution of tennis bracelets has broadened their appeal beyond tennis players to fashion enthusiasts and collectors. The flexible use and timeless design of these bracelets make them a must-have in luxury jewelry.

Tennis Bracelet Designs & Brands

Tennis bracelets come in a ton of different designs, each to serve to different tastes & preferences. The traditional design features a continuous line of diamonds set in precious metal. However, modern variations have use different gemstones, shapes, and settings.

Here are some of the most popular tennis bracelet designs:

  1. Classic Diamond Tennis Bracelets: The classic one features a single row of round-cut diamonds, which clearly shows it elegance and timeless looks. Their simplicity and sparkle make them a popular choice for those seeking a luxurious look.

  2. Gemstone Tennis Bracelets: Using gemstones like sapphires, emeralds, and rubies, these bracelets add vibrant color and a more personal feel to it. They have a unique twist on the classic design. But still feel like a luxury item. Our own gemstone bracelets come pretty close.

  3. Men’s Tennis Bracelets: Focused more on men, these bracelets use larger stones and thicker bands, combining strength with sophistication. They are bold, and suitable for men who appreciate luxury and refined style.

  4. Mixed Metal Tennis Bracelets: These bracelets combine metals such as white gold, yellow gold, and platinum, creating a unique and versatile look. They are perfect for those who want a contemporary piece.

  5. Vintage Tennis Bracelets: Vintage tennis bracelets often feature intricate designs and antique settings. They show old-world charm and craftsmanship. They are ideal for those who appreciate historical elegance and wish to own a piece with a storied past.

Materials Used

Most tennis bracelets are traditionally crafted from precious metals like gold (white, yellow, and rose) and platinum. Diamonds, prized for their brilliance and hardness, are the primary gemstones used. Recently the diamond market is not going as strong as before, my brother in law is diamond cutter from Antwerp, Belgium, and he sees that the expensive diamond marketing is going through tough times. Even at bigger manufacturers like LVMH or Cartier.

There are alternatives though, like moissanite & cubic zirconia, They are affordable options with comparable sparkle. The settings can also feature prongs, bezels, or channels, each affecting the bracelet's style and security.

Additionally, some designs incorporate mixed metals for a unique look. The quality of the clasp is crucial for durability, ensuring the bracelet remains secure during wear.
